Native American Heritage: Powwows

This guide is intended to provide resource material on the varied aspects of Native American culture, heritage, and history.

About Powwows

Powwows (sometimes appearing as "Pow Wows") offer a unique blend of tribal dances, regalia, folklore, food, music, and song.  Vendors, many of whom are Native American craftsmen, may also display their works for purchase.  An opportunity you certainly don't want to miss!

Powwow Etiquette

Powwow Etiquette

Before heading out to enjoy a Powwow, you should first learn about expected etiquette - the dos and don'ts.  Following the rules of etiquette allow you to honor and respect the ceremonial rites and celebrations, as well as the spirit of cultural exchange.

All the "rules" listed at the website below are important, however there are three rules that need to be stressed off the top:

1) Never touch, or allow a child to touch, any item or adornment or part of an individual's regalia.  Many items are blessed prior to the Powwow and handling of items may contaminate them, forcing their owner to undergo the blessing ritual again;

2)  Taking photos is fine but please, when possible, ask for permission - and tips are always appreciated!

3) Never refer to the attire of the dancers as "costumes" - they should be referred to only as "regalia."
