This LibGuide is designed to provide a starting point for those wishing to learn more about our rich, Native American heritage while exploring many aspects. This is not designed to provide one with all the answers, but merely to jump start that quest by referring the user on to other resources.
Honor and respect the old ways while valuing the continuing, unfolding story of "The People."
Native American vs. American Indian
The question ultimately comes up when speaking with or about the indigenous populations of America, "what do we call them?" Most prefer to be recognized by their own tribal names which often translates as "The People." In Canada, Indian populations are referred to as the "First Nations." Here, there is a bit more ambiguity.
In a survey that was sent out, individuals were asked which terms they preferred, outside of their own specific tribal designations: American Indian, Native American, or Indian. The results were a three-way split [citation needed].
The following article, "‘Native American’ or ‘American Indian’? How to Talk About Indigenous People of America," discusses not only what is appropriate but how to be sensitive in approaching the topic in casual conversation.
