Digital Skills: Blackboard

This guide will help students develop skills to connect to and use Blackboard, Navigate, and other educational websites, as well as access invaluable resources to learn new computing skills or support their educational goals.

Introduction to Blackboard Learn

Welcome to Blackboard Learn with the Ultra Experience - a learner-centered environment designed to improve user efficiency and satisfaction in a modern, comfortable, and simple interface. This overview will help you, the student, become familiar with the new interface. The streamlined navigation and workflows are designed to allow you to get in, get done, and get out.

Blackboard Videos: Staying Engaged

Use course-to-course navigation to quickly jump from one Blackboard course to another. By using this feature, you can move from a tool in one course to the same tool in another course.

The up-to-the-minute activity stream lets you jump directly into course actions.

In Blackboard Learn with the Ultra Experience, your messages all have one home—just like a normal inbox, but better. You can access all your messages right from the base navigation, or from your course. This video will take you on a functionality tour of the Messages feature.

You can choose the types of notifications you receive and how they're delivered to you. This video shows you how to customize your notification preferences.

Timing is everything, that’s why we’ve added calendar to the base navigation. This global calendar provides events from across the system, showing dates from multiple courses in one convenient location. If you access the calendar with a course, it displays due dates, the course schedule, office hours, and events for that course only. Any events you add within a course are specific to that course.

Blackboard Videos: Retrieving and Submitting Assignments

Assignments are created by your instructor. They can be used for simply submitting homework. Assignments can also be used to participate in a back-and-forth review process of projects and papers. This tutorial shows you how to access assignments, download and edit an assignment file, and upload it back to Blackboard.

The editor appears in many locations throughout Blackboard Learn. It provides text editing functions and much more.

You can find tests and surveys in any content area, learning module, lesson plan, or folder. Your instructor lets you know when a test is available and where to find it in your course. This video provides an overview of tests in Blackboard Learn in the Original Course View.

In Blackboard Learn with the Ultra experience, you can see grades for all your courses at once, one course at a time, or from an item in your course.

Accessibility in Blackboard

Blackboard Ally works within your Original courses to provide accessible course content in a format that works best for you. Accessible files include readable text for screen readers, pictures with captions, and easy-to-navigate content.

Troubleshooting Your Blackboard Experience

Using either a Google Chrome or Mozilla Firefox web browser will result in the best experience while accessing Blackboard and many of the websites and applications you will use while at Forsyth Tech. Safari, Internet Explorer, or Microsoft Edge are not recommended while using most College websites.
